Student Success

My husband is in the military and we had the opportunity to tour the OSU football complex and meet the team! As we were walking through the complex I was inspired by their "Block O Of Life" and thought we could implement something like that at Highland. Each month teachers will nominate students based on the nine characteristics and fill out the a student success form. At the end of each month a picture of the student and the teachers recommendation will hang in the hallway and will be in the local newspaper. The students are then asked to attend the board meeting where they are recognized by our principal and their picture it also posted on our school website so the student and teacher are recognized.
Peer Mediation

The Peer Mediation program at Highland High School enables peers to resolve disputes using a process involving talking and active listening. Students are trained to develop the necessary skills for effective communication.
The selection of peer mediators were chosen from the teachers at Highland and are viewed as having good communication skills, respect of self and peers, self-confidence, shows empathy, shows leadership roles, ability to speak in front of groups and commitment. Since these students miss some class time, they need to be willing and able to make up assignments.
Students who are experiencing a conflict with another student can choose to request mediation. Participation must be voluntary and each member must agree to work together to resolve a conflict. Teachers can also refer students to peer mediation.
PEER MEDIATION PROGRAM GOALS
-To empower students to resolve conflicts
-To teach problem-solving skills to students
-To provide models for character via the peer mediators
-To enhance communication skills

Become a leader in your community
As a counselor, it is our role to educate students and their parents about how community service can impact college admissions and scholarship opportunities. As one of the Key Club advisors at Bowling Green High School I am able to tell the students the importance of volunteering, but also provide them with opportunities to help in the community. By being an advisor it not only allows students who might feel uncomfortable joining have a familiar face, but it also allows me to work with students in a different position and build the rapport needed when building a counseling relationship. This opportunity has allowed me to build positive relationships within the community and also provide great experiences for the students.
Breaking Down the Walls

During my internship I decided to have an after school program after school to build positive friendships. My supervisor and I created games that allowed the students to work together. Our goal was to build positive friendships by placing the students who attended in different groups. This allowed the students to branch out of their normal friendship group and try to get to know other students in the school.
Making Character Count!

When a student is caught promoting positive behavior the teacher fills out a "Making Character Count" ticket. Each week the counselor picks a ticket from each grade level and they receive a certificate. Just a nice way to let the students know we are proud of the positive choices they make.
Celebrity Spotlight

This is an opportunity for me to get to know all students, but in a different role. Each week I would choose a student who demonstrates the schools core values. When the student is a Celebrity Spotlight, a picture of them will be put on the bulletin board and some fun facts about the student.
Bucket Filling

Bucket Filling is a way to promote positive relationships. Everyone carries around an invisible bucket and you want to be a bucket filler not a bucket dipper.
