IDEAS I AM EXCITED TO START IN MY COUNSELING CAREER!
NEW STUDENT MIXER
Starting a new school can be intimidating. When you aren’t involved in extracurricular activities, it can be difficult to meet new people. This year our guidance department thought it would be great to create a welcoming environment by having all new students and members of our Student Activities Board eat lunch together. Each student came to the guidance office to eat lunch and engage in conversation with students at BGHS. It’s often easier for new students to ask questions to their same aged peers, rather than their guidance counselor. So we wanted to provide them the opportunity to do so. With me being one of the Student Activities Board advisors, I am able to encourage my students to continue checking in with the new students to make them feel more comfortable and build rapport with BGHS students.

Career Cafe

Career Café is an opportunity for students to meet individuals from their community and learn about their careers. At the beginning of the year we visited all English classes to introduce ourselves, talk about graduation requirements and talk about college/career readiness. We asked each student there top three careers they are interested in. After we gathered data, we then reached out to the community to see if they would be interested in coming to our school for career café. This opportunity allowed the students to get involved with the community and ask professionals questions about the job they are thinking about pursuing.
Below are some pictures from Career Cafe. I also added our Career Cafe sign-up sheet to help you understand how I kept track of the career each student was interested in and to help me collect data.
